Kamala Harris Fundraising as Hurricane Helene Victims Struggle Spurs Outrage

The destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Helene has created headlines for all the wrong reasons, particularly for Vice President Kamala Harris, who appears to be more focused on fundraising than on providing tangible support to the millions affected by the storm. As Helene plowed through Florida like it was auditioning for a reality show, leaving more than two million people without power and dozens unaccounted for, the contrast between Harris’s actions and those of former President Donald Trump couldn’t be starker. One was out in the field, showing concern, while the other seemed content to sip champagne with her elite pals in San Francisco. Tough to soar above that public relations catastrophe.

Critics have noted that while the debris still smoldered in Valdosta, Georgia, Trump was busy assessing the damage and offering aid to the victims of Helene. On the other hand, Harris’s absence raised eyebrows and stirred sentiments of frustration. The fact that Harris, the supposedly second-most powerful person in the country, has largely been incognito during this disaster has not gone unnoticed. While people are literally fighting for survival, Harris seems more interested in hobnobbing with the well-heeled than in tending to the nation’s urgent needs.

Commentators have been vocal in pointing out Harris’s misplaced priorities. Former Trump advisor Stephen Miller tweeted about the absurdity of the Vice President enjoying her lavish lifestyle while Americans were in dire straits. The glaring disconnect between the current administration’s focus and the reality faced by citizens has fueled outrage. Ian Miles Cheong did not hold back, emphasizing the heart-wrenching devastation in Asheville and questioning where Harris was during such a critical moment.

The media reaction has also been underwhelming. Observers can’t help but wonder why the press has been so gently critiquing Harris’s actions (or lack thereof) when similar circumstances brought relentless scrutiny to George W. Bush during Hurricane Katrina—an event that has become the poster child for presidential failures. The silence from mainstream outlets regarding Harris’s non-appearance in the storm-ravaged areas feels like selective amnesia.

As President Biden stumbled through a vague response when asked about the victims, it became clear that his administration’s grasp on urgency and empathy for hurricane survivors seems to be as shaky as the storm-shattered homes themselves. It is painfully ironic that while citizens were praying for help, the administration was busy denying requests for more resources, claiming pre-planned distributions had already occurred. The burn of bureaucracy would make anyone wonder who’s really running the show here.

What’s most comical is Harris’s attempt to reassure voters during her Sunday night rally in Las Vegas, where she feigned concern for those “devastated” by the hurricane. Her scripted lines left little impact, especially after she promptly canceled her Monday campaign stops for a briefing in Washington—an obvious move meant to convey a sense of urgency but instead reeked of avoidance. If her team thought this would endear her to voters, it might be time for a reality check. After all, Americans are looking for leaders who will act rather than those who merely put on a show.
