Conservative Groups Demand End to Gender-Affirming Care for Children

Earlier this week, the American College of Pediatricians (ACP) and other health policy groups and conservative organizations united to urge medical professionals to cease providing “gender-affirming” care for children.

These groups, which are also known as “Doctors Protecting Children,” released a declaration stating their concerns about the current protocols for the care of children and adolescents in the United States who express discomfort with their biological sex. They emphasized the need for medical decisions to be based on more than just an individual’s thoughts and feelings about their “gender identity.”

Furthermore, the declaration highlighted the shift away from gender-affirming care in other countries, such as England, Finland, Denmark, and Sweden, in favor of a more traditional approach involving psychiatric evaluation and treatment.

Louis Brown of the Catholic Health Care Leadership Alliance emphasized the ethical obligation of the American healthcare system to provide children with medical care that is healing, credible, and conducive to true human flourishing.

In contrast, the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have supported gender-affirming care despite the trend of other countries moving away from this approach.

England, for example, made headlines when its National Health Service (NHS) announced plans to stop prescribing puberty blockers for children. Dr. Hilary Cass, a pediatrician, also conducted a review that questioned the foundations of “gender-affirming” care for kids.

Additionally, expert opinions from Finland have challenged the notion that all children who experience gender confusion will continue to identify as transgender into adulthood. Dr. Rittakerttu Kaltiala, a leading authority on pediatric gender medicine, emphasized that most young individuals eventually grow out of their gender confusion during their teenage years.

Overall, the conservative groups’ call for a cessation of gender-affirming care for children reflects a growing concern about the long-term effects of such treatments on minors.
