In an entertaining display of political banter, GOP presidential hopeful Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) wasted no time in clapping back at Hillary Clinton after her recent comments about “formal deprogramming” for MAGA voters. Clinton, a twice-failed presidential candidate, took aim at “MAGA extremists” who she claims blindly follow the commands of Donald Trump. But DeSantis was having none of it.

With a dismissive wave of his hand, DeSantis declared, “I reject that.” He went on to emphasize that MAGA voters are patriotic Americans who simply want to see their country succeed. It’s important to note that these loyal voters are not necessarily tied to the former president himself. They understand and appreciate what Trump accomplished during his tenure, but they also recognize his limitations.
Now, let’s address DeSantis’ critique of Trump. While he acknowledges that some people will stand by Trump no matter what, he believes the majority of MAGA supporters are pragmatic individuals who recognize Trump’s flaws. DeSantis points out that Trump’s electability would be a major concern as he would essentially be a “lame duck” on day one, if elected at all. Additionally, DeSantis highlights Trump’s failure to follow through on key promises, such as draining the swamp, having Mexico pay for the border wall, and reducing the national debt. In fact, the debt rose by a whopping $7.8 trillion during Trump’s time in office.
It’s refreshing to see a Republican candidate willing to confront his own party’s former leader with constructive criticism. DeSantis’ ability to speak his mind while still promoting the values of the Republican Party is admirable. He is willing to acknowledge both the successes and the shortcomings of Trump, demonstrating a level-headed approach to politics and governance. With his clear understanding of the concerns and priorities of conservative voters, DeSantis is proving himself to be a formidable contender in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
