On Friday, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida talked about defending the rights of parents during a speech at an event in South Carolina. As DeSantis was defending parental rights legislation, a heckler interrupted him, shouting “fascist.” Governor DeSantis quickly responded, saying, “We’re not going to let them impose an agenda on our kids, we’re going to stand up for our kids. We’re gonna make sure to do it right. That’s what we’re gonna do!”
DeSantis has recently announced his candidacy for the presidential elections scheduled for 2024. As Governor of Florida, he signed legislation in March 2022 to protect parents’ rights. The legislation protects the fundamental right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children. Disney opposed the law, and its opposition resulted in a feud with Governor DeSantis.

Governor DeSantis defended the new law, saying, “The school systems are important, but they’re there to support the community. They’re not there to supersede the rights of parents and what they think is appropriate.” The law includes curriculum transparency, ensuring that parents know what books their children are reading, and what curriculum is being taught to them. Following the enactment of the bill, schools in Florida pulled out several books from their curriculums, including “Gender Queer,” “Let’s Talk About It,” and “It’s Perfectly Normal.”
Governor DeSantis noted that there is inappropriate content, such as pornography, in schools. He remarked, “Unfortunately, there’s bad stuff that’s getting into the schools…so the parents had to blow the whistle in Florida.” DeSantis opposes teaching Critical Race Theory and Queer theory in schools, which holds that America is fundamentally racist and highly divisive issues.
In conclusion, Governor DeSantis has taken a bold step to protect parents’ rights, including their children’s education and upbringing. Despite the opposition from Disney and some other groups, Governor DeSantis has continued to champion the rights of parents. It remains to be seen how far his political ambitions will take him in America, but it is admirable that he has stood up for what he believes in and is working to protect families.
