According to the emails obtained from Hunter’s abandoned laptop, he actively advised Burisma executives on how to derail a joint investigation by the U.S. and U.K. into corruption allegations against the company. Hunter facilitated communication between a Burisma executive and himself, where the executive sought Hunter’s assistance in stopping what they considered politically motivated actions. This revelation reinforces the widespread belief that Burisma hired Hunter solely for his connections and ability to deflect any investigation into their wrongdoing.
Moreover, the emails shed light on the motivation behind Hunter’s actions. Burisma executive Vadym Pozharsky, who reached out to Hunter, claimed that the company was a victim of blackmail. Hunter, ever eager to please, expressed his willingness to assist. He even requested information on individuals within the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office to understand who would be leading the restructuring of the office. This raises serious questions about Hunter’s involvement in shaping the Ukrainian government to protect Burisma’s interests.
The firing of Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin becomes even more suspicious in light of these email exchanges. Shokin, who took over the investigation into Burisma in 2015, was reportedly obstructed by a $7 million bribe paid by Burisma’s founder, Mykola Zlochevsky. Despite Shokin’s efforts to accelerate the investigation, Hunter facilitated the connection between his company and a Washington-based consulting firm that lobbied Obama State Department officials on Burisma’s behalf.
