Kamala Harris seems to be in quite the pickle as the Democratic National Convention approaches, and the stench of radicalism permeates the air in Chicago. The Wall Street Journal’s Kimberley Strassel pointed out that Harris has missed a golden opportunity to distance herself from the anti-Israel factions that plan to swarm the city with their protests. It’s expected that around 100,000 protesters, many from anti-Israel groups gloating over their supposed moral superiority, will be chanting their way through the streets. Meanwhile, the lone voice of pro-Israel demonstration has been sidelined and lacks even the city’s permission to make a peep.
Harris hasn’t shied away from expressing her admiration for the “emotion” behind these protests, a stance that has effectively turned a blind eye to the scenes of antisemitic rhetoric and violence that have become disturbingly normal across college campuses and urban centers nationwide. While she may verbally distance herself from the more outrageous claims made at such events, her actions suggest an unsettling alignment. A recent hire from the anti-Israel protest circuit raises eyebrows further, especially as they’ve attempted to downplay the connection between these protests and antisemitism.

The radical left seem undeterred by Harris’s half-hearted gestures. As Strassel noted, even Harris’s consideration of a less radical running mate—Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania—sparked outrage. Opting instead for Governor Tim Walz from Minnesota may have calmed that storm, but the relentless radicals remain firmly entrenched in their demands. They want nothing less than the complete abandonment of support for Israel, and chaos ensues as evidenced by the demonstrations planned by a coalition of 150 groups, including Black Lives Matter. Apparently, the only math these folks are capable of doing is the calculation of how many buses they can cram into Chicago for their protest.
In a brilliant display of their not-so-hidden agenda, some radical groups are rallying around slogans like “Kamala = Genocide,” hinting at the absurdity and venom that flows through the veins of this movement. They’ve even raised funds for “medical kits” to arm themselves against the supposedly tyrannical Chicago police. It appears that their version of a political battle might actually be a masked preparation for pandemonium reminiscent of the 1968 Democratic Convention. This is hardly the type of “unity” that could inspire any sense of confidence in their party.

So one must wonder: how will Kamala Harris respond to any mayhem that transpires next week? Standing by, hoping for the chaos to subside while dodging responsibility won’t cut it, especially with the eyes of the nation fixed upon her. The opportunity to sever ties with the radicals and set a moral compass for her party has seriously slipped through her fingers, throwing into question her leadership and vision for the future of the Democrats. If Minouche Shafik, the former president of Columbia University, couldn’t handle the antisemitic tensions that swelled under her watch, what result can we realistically expect from Harris? After all, she has a history of not only supporting but practically fanning the flames of unrest.
If nothing else, Harris is facing a reality check. Riding the wave of radical politics may provide some temporary adrenaline, but as the DNC approaches, the mounting chaos in Chicago exposes the cracks in her party’s facade. It’s a make-or-break moment, and the radical left will surely relish in any lapse of judgment she displays. The stakes have never been higher, and yet, ironically, the only result seems to be the strengthening of the ties between Democrats and the very chaos they claim to reject.
