Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is in hot water, according to a new report by Axios. Sources within the GOP say that McCarthy’s support has been dwindling among conservatives ever since he folded to President Biden during the last government shutdown funding bill. Now, as another funding measure approaches, conservatives are gearing up for a fight and demanding concessions in exchange for their support. Some have even floated the idea of impeaching President Biden.
One frustrated conservative, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN), voiced his concerns, saying, “I think it’s in the back of everybody’s mind… If somebody brings that [motion to vacate], it wouldn’t take much, you know, it just takes a couple of votes.” A motion to vacate the Speaker’s seat can be proposed by a single member of the House under certain conditions, and if just a handful of Republicans join forces with the Democrats, McCarthy could be ousted.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) also warned McCarthy about the consequences of standing in the way of impeachment proceedings, saying, “If Kevin McCarthy stands in our way, you may not have the job long.” Gaetz emphasized the need to seize the initiative and force votes on impeachment when Congress reconvenes.
However, it’s worth noting that not all conservatives are on board with this push to remove McCarthy. Some have anonymously voiced their support for the Speaker, crediting him with making significant concessions that have benefited conservative members of Congress. McCarthy’s efforts have allowed GOP representatives like Jim Jordan (R-OH) and James Comer (R-KY) to secure top committee positions and uncover damning details about President Biden’s involvement in overseas business activities.

Despite the growing dissent within his party, McCarthy has a few allies that may help him retain his leadership position. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a controversial figure known for her strong support of former President Trump, has backed McCarthy throughout his speakership. She has encouraged members of the House Freedom Caucus to engage in dialogue with McCarthy, in hopes of shaping a more effective agenda for the future.
In the end, McCarthy’s fate as House Speaker will likely rely on his ability to appease his conservative critics and rally support from his more loyal allies. The next few weeks will be crucial for him as he navigates the upcoming funding measure and attempts to hold onto his gavel.
