A judge in New York County struck down an order that banned “transgender” athletes from participating in women’s sports. The executive order, signed by County Executive Bruce Blakeman, was aimed at preventing transgender women from competing in girls’ and women’s athletics in county parks. The order faced legal challenges when New York Attorney General Letitia James sent a cease-and-desist letter to the county.

County Executive Blakeman responded to the cease-and-desist letter by announcing that the county would sue James. However, Judge Francis Ricigliano ruled that Blakeman did not have the authority to issue the order, stating that there was no corresponding legislative enactment providing him with such authority.
Blakeman expressed disappointment in the court’s decision, stating that the lack of courage from the judge hurt girls and women. He had previously justified the order by saying, “We are protecting girls’ right to compete against other girls. It makes no sense for biological boys who identify as transgender to compete against girls. It’s completely unfair.”
He argued that biological boys have a physical advantage over girls and women, being faster, bigger, and stronger. This ruling comes after a resolution was approved in Manhattan’s largest neighborhood school board district in March, which could lead to a ban on so-called “transgender” athletes in girls’ sports.
