NY Senator’s Radical Plan Proposes New York Leaves US For Canada Amid Trump Presidency Concerns

It seems that the winds of absurdity are once again blowing through the halls of power in New York, with state Senator Liz Krueger leading the charge for what can only be described as a political train wreck. In the aftermath of the 2024 election, where Republicans emerged victorious, Krueger, a Democrat from New York City, has taken it upon herself to suggest that New York secede from the Union altogether and make the leap to Canada. This proposal might be humorous if it weren’t so indicative of the current political climate dominated by the left’s fear of a Trump presidency.

This call for secession isn’t just a whimsical suggestion but rather reflects the frustrations of a party that feels cornered. Krueger and her Democratic allies are reportedly contemplating some truly bizarre maneuvers in response to the incoming Trump administration. Among these notable strategies is the idea of withholding federal taxes, which sounds less like a legitimate political strategy and more like a toddler threatening to hold their breath until they get what they want. It’s hard to imagine that New York, one of the largest contributors to federal coffers, would truly embark on a fiscal tantrum to join Canada.

One would expect a bit more rationality from a state senator, especially one with such lofty titles as chair of the state Senate Finance Committee. Krueger has voiced that thinking outside the box is necessary in light of Trump’s presidency. However, many would argue that the box hearkens back to the essence of America—liberty, economic opportunity, and a government that, while flawed, continues to be a systemic good compared to any far-left utopia or, dare it be said, the snowy provinces of Canada. It’s always more fun to imagine what lies beyond the fence, but hopping the border for a cozy life in Canada is a notion better suited for a sitcom than for actual political discourse.

The rationale behind such a radical proposal? It appears to stem from a fear that Trump’s administration may indeed cut federal funding to states that fail to enforce immigration laws. This has sent many panicking, particularly in a place like New York, where billions flow in federal dollars and illegal immigration has become a contentious issue. So, naturally, instead of enforcing the laws they (should) abide by, they’re considering a national divorce to escape the consequences of their actions. If withdrawing from the Union is the solution, it raises the question of whether New York too has been swept away by the waves of one of the most famous adages: “Can’t take the heat? Get out of the kitchen.”

Perhaps the most entertaining aspect of this whole ordeal is the implications for other northeastern states. Krueger isn’t just aiming for a solo exit; she’s got her sights set on recruiting Connecticut, Massachusetts, and even Vermont to join the merry Canadian caravan. One can only hope that her efforts will be met with the reticent eye-roll they deserve. After all, what would New York do without the federal infrastructure it’s always leaned on? Trade in the Statue of Liberty for a moose? It’s a comically impractical scenario.

Ultimately, this entire escapade illustrates just how far the left will go when faced with the incoming Trump administration and what they term “border enforcement.” Senator Krueger’s plan to protect illegal immigrants at the expense of her constituents is laughable at best and disheartening at worst. While she risks painting herself as a champion of the ineffectual, the majority of New Yorkers would likely rather see their tax dollars go towards funding for local schools, public safety, and, frankly, keeping their state on the map as part of the United States, rather than chasing a pipedream of northern neighborly bliss.
