It is incredibly heartbreaking to see yet another instance of suicide, especially in light of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s findings that suicide rates have gone up in recent years, with 2021 being a peak year. Although the woman’s name has been withheld from the press for privacy reasons, it is essential to acknowledge the family and friends who have been affected by this tragedy and are in mourning.
This weekend’s gruesome discovery is, unfortunately, not the first time that someone has been found dead in the Hudson River. In May, New York City boy Alfa Barrie was discovered in the river near 102nd Street and Riverside Drive. He had gone missing two weeks prior and was last seen with his 13-year-old friend, Garrett Warren, who was found dead in the Harlem River two days before Barrie’s body was located. Police ruled out foul play in their investigation into both deaths.
Ahmadou Diallo, Barrie’s uncle, spoke to CBS News New York and shared how much his nephew meant to their family. He described Barrie as a curious, loving, and charming boy who always kissed his mother goodbye before leaving for school. He added that Barrie was a big helper at home, often assisting with household tasks such as doing laundry and the dishes.
It is devastating to see two families lose their children so suddenly and tragically. Our thoughts and prayers must go out to the family and friends of the deceased, who are going through an indescribable pain in the aftermath of the tragedy.
