OpenAI CEO Sam Altman visited Washington to chat about artificial intelligence policy on Capitol Hill. Efforts to create new laws for governing AI have been moving real slow.
Mr. Altman was recently in the Middle East and then talked with Sen. Todd Young, who’s a member of the Senate Artificial Intelligence Caucus. They chatted about writing AI legislation, but Mr. Altman didn’t get a clear idea of when Congress might move forward on that.

Sen. Young said before that Congress might not pass a big AI legislative package this year. Instead, the Senate has been interested in making more limited AI-related bills.
Congress is doing other bills first, but other places are moving faster. President Biden put new rules on AI use in U.S. federal agencies. The European Parliament approved the EU AI Act to regulate AI. China is also working to control generative AI.
Even though there are new rules happening, AI makers are still ready to do big things. It sounds like OpenAI made over $2 billion in the last six months. Mr. Altman is looking to get more money, including from the United Arab Emirates, for a new project to make chips and power AI.
He met with investors and government officials in the UAE to get more funding.
