An elderly woman in California, Fran Itkoff, was unfairly forced to resign from her volunteer position with the National MS Society just for asking about “preferred pronouns.” Fran, who had been dedicating her time to the organization for over six decades and even received multiple awards, including the Volunteer Lifetime Achievement award, was shocked when she was told to step down.
It all started when Fran expressed confusion about the use of pronouns, which she noticed listed next to people’s names in emails. She simply wanted to understand what it meant, but instead of providing clarity, the organization decided to penalize her for not being “inclusive” enough. They claimed she failed to abide by their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion guidelines, which led to the decision to have her step down immediately.

Fran’s daughter, Elle Hamilton, expressed her disbelief at the situation, highlighting the hypocrisy of an organization claiming to be inclusive while excluding a 90-year-old woman who has dedicated her life to helping MS patients. She highlighted that Fran’s late husband also had MS and was recognized as National MS Father of the Year, even meeting President Jimmy Carter at the White House.
The family’s deep involvement in the organization over the years makes the discrimination against Fran even more upsetting. Elle emphasized the irony of the MS Society focusing on pronouns rather than its primary mission of finding a cure for MS and supporting patients.
The biased conservative viewpoint on this issue would definitely highlight the injustice towards Fran, painting the MS Society as more concerned with politically correct language than their actual cause. It would emphasize the absurdity of penalizing a devoted volunteer for seeking to understand a new concept, especially when she has a long history of valuable contributions to the organization.
