A recent survey conducted by Echelon Insights has found that if Robert F. Kennedy Jr. were to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential election, it would help former President Donald Trump and hurt President Joe Biden. According to the survey, in a head-to-head matchup between Trump and Biden, Trump currently leads with 46 percent of the vote compared to Biden’s 43 percent. However, if Kennedy were to enter the race as an independent candidate, Trump’s lead would expand to four points, with 40 percent of the vote, while Biden would only receive 36 percent. Kennedy himself would garner 14 percent of the vote, with the remaining 10 percent undecided.

Interestingly, the survey also revealed that Democrats would be more negatively affected by Kennedy’s independent run than Republicans. Among Democrat-leaning voters, Kennedy would secure 17 percent of the vote, while among Republican-leaning voters, he would only receive 11 percent. This suggests that Kennedy’s candidacy could potentially fracture the Democratic base and give Trump a stronger advantage.
Kennedy’s decision to run as an independent comes in response to his belief that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is intentionally excluding him from the political process. He plans to make an official announcement on October 9 in Pennsylvania. This move is likely to cause further concern for the Democratic Party, especially considering previous surveys have shown that third-party bids can have a detrimental impact on Democratic candidates. With Kennedy and a potential bid from Cornel West, Democrats may find themselves facing an uphill battle in the 2024 election.
