Andrey Gurulyov, a former military commander and State Duma member, has garnered attention for his provocative language concerning nuclear attacks against Western countries. During a broadcast on Russia-1, which is controlled by the Kremlin, he made comments that sparked a strong reaction of shock and indignation. The Russian ultra-nationalist argued that a nuclear strike is the sole means to achieve sustained peace, claiming that Americans “won’t come to their senses” unless they “get hit with a nuke on their skull.”
Gurulyov’s recent statements are consistent with his tendency to make irresponsible and exaggerated claims. In September, when he appeared on Russia-1, Gurulyov suggested that Putin’s military could transform the United Kingdom into a barren wasteland with nuclear attacks. Furthermore, he asserted that a nuclear strike against Germany or the U.K. was a plausible course of action, disregarding NATO’s Article 5 agreement, which stipulates that the entire alliance would react if one of its member countries is attacked.

At a moment when Norwegian intelligence reports indicate that Russia is deploying warships in the Baltic Sea, Gurulyov’s incendiary comments have been made. This naval mobilization follows the devastation of Russia’s Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea by disabling explosions. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh has blamed President Joe Biden for orchestrating the operation.
Gurulyov’s remarks have provoked broad bipartisan criticism, with many interpreting them as a violation of international law and an effort to destabilize the security of Western countries. Moreover, the Duma representative has gone on record stating that Ukraine belongs to Russia and that Russia is responsible for maintaining global peace.
Gurulyov’s statements advocating for nuclear strikes on the U.S. are not only careless and imprudent, but they also pose a significant peril and may result in a worldwide confrontation.
