Senator Ted Budd: Freedom, Not Red Tape, Fuels North Carolina Boom

Senator Ted Budd’s short video for Breitbart’s “American Tributes” series does exactly what conservative politicians should do this week: remind Americans why freedom matters and point to where it is actually working. In the clip, Budd praises the Founding Fathers for rejecting “overreach and over regulation,” touts North Carolina as a center of innovation, and ties that message to the national Freedom 250 celebrations on the National Mall.

Budd’s Message: Freedom Fuels Innovation

In plain language, Budd told viewers that America became great by choosing freedom over heavy-handed government. He said, “We’re a nation that honors tradition and embraces innovation,” and argued that growth happens where people keep more of what they earn and businesses aren’t strangled by red tape. He pointed to North Carolina’s universities, infrastructure, and workforce as proof that low barriers and strong communities attract jobs and people.

Why that angle matters for conservatives

This is not nostalgic bluster. It’s a policy pitch wrapped in a patriotic moment. Conservatives should be making the case that protecting property rights and reducing regulatory chokeholds create real opportunity — the kind that produces the “blue-collar boom” Budd mentioned. If voters can see an honest link between liberty and prosperity, the abstract talk about “the Founders” becomes a living argument about where to steer our economy.

Context: Freedom 250, the Great American State Fair, and the critics

Budd’s remarks land amid the Freedom 250 “Great American State Fair” programming on the National Mall (June 25–July 10), which the group says will feature headline moments including President Donald J. Trump. That celebratory stage, naturally, has drawn scrutiny: Democratic senators led by Sen. Adam Schiff have probed Freedom 250 fundraising and donor access, and the fair has seen some performers withdraw and a few logistical hiccups. Those headlines are messy — and predictable — but they don’t change the core point Budd raises about freedom and growth.

Conservatives should not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Budd’s clip is a clear, effective reminder that liberty and low regulation help states like North Carolina thrive. Yes, oversight and transparency around any big public event are appropriate. But let’s not let political theater drown out the argument that America’s founding choices — limited government, protected rights, and space for risk‑taking — are the engine of our prosperity. If the left wants to throw subpoenas while the rest of us build, let them. We’ll keep making the case for freedom, and for policies that let Americans and states actually win.
