Thune Counts Votes Instead of Fighting for Voter ID

Senate Majority Leader John Thune says he’s “counting votes” on the SAVE America Act. Translation: he’s treating a top Republican priority like a homework problem instead of a fight worth having. After a forced vote during a reconciliation debate failed, leadership quietly pivoted to other items. Conservative voters deserve better than arithmetic from the man with the gavel.

Why the SAVE America Act matters

The SAVE America Act is about voter ID and proof of citizenship for federal elections. Republican voters want secure elections. They sent a clear message when the House passed the bill. Now the Senate has to decide if it will follow through. If the GOP can’t deliver on a basic promise like voter ID, conservatives will wonder what else is just talk.

Thune’s counting is not leadership

Senator John Kennedy forced the vote and the amendment failed. A few Republican senators — Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, and Thom Tillis — joined Democrats to block it. That shows the math is tight. But leadership is supposed to create pressure, not report outcomes. Thune can cite the filibuster and the parliamentarian, but he can also press, cajole, and make lawmakers own their choices. Counting to 48 is not the same thing as finding the five votes you need.

What conservatives should demand now

President Donald Trump and hard-line allies pushed for more aggressive options. Thune refused to override the parliamentarian and moved to other priorities like a stand‑alone FISA renewal. Fine — but don’t call it leadership. Conservatives should demand that the Senate majority make Democrats defend their opposition on the record and force vulnerable incumbents to explain themselves back home. If leadership won’t lead, activists should back primary challenges and local pressure campaigns where it matters most.

Final word: stop tallying, start fighting

There are two kinds of leaders: the ones who count votes and the ones who find them. Thune has the title and the majority. Now he needs the appetite. Voter ID and election integrity are not niche issues for a GOP base that actually shows up. Counting votes from the sidelines is how good bills quietly die. If the majority wants to keep its promises, it’s time to get uncomfortable, get loud, and get votes — not memorize them.
