Former President Donald Trump is apparently giving Vice President Kamala Harris a serious case of electoral heartburn, leading her by three points in a newly released poll. In the survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal from October 19 to October 22, 2024, Trump garnered a robust 49% of support, while Harris trailed behind at 46%. This two-point advantage is offering a refreshing view of Trump’s standing as he gears up for another run at the presidency.
When the researchers expanded the scope to include third-party and independent candidates, Trump’s lead remained virtually unchanged. He still managed to secure 47% of the pie, while Harris clung to a measly 45%. Given that many Americans are hungry for alternatives to the mainstream political diet, it appears the support for the elderly Democrat isn’t so solid after all.
The poll also sheds some light on the opinions regarding Harris. It turns out that since August, views of her have taken a nosedive. Her approval rating now sits at a woeful 42% to 54%, suggesting that the vice president is not exactly winning any popularity contests. In contrast, views of Trump have warmed up, with voters approving of his past performance in the White House by a margin of 52% to 48%. It seems Americans have short memories when it comes to Trump, as the nation’s nostalgia for his time in office is possibly lifting him back into the limelight.
Interestingly, these results signal a significant turnaround from an August survey where Harris was enjoying a lead over Trump. It’s like watching a football game where the underdog suddenly takes the lead and leaves the favored team scrambling to recover. This shift is particularly relevant as it reveals how the political tides in America can change—just as one might expect from a nation that relishes a bit of drama.
Further corroborating Trump’s bounce-back, a separate national poll conducted by AtlastIntel between October 12 and October 17 found Trump with a commanding 50.8% against Harris’s 48.1%. Even another recent Fox News poll from October 11 to 14 shows Trump leading Harris by a couple of points at 50% to her 48%. If these trends continue, one might say that Kamala Harris should start dusting off her resume and considering her options, because the American electorate seems to have a strong appetite for a Trump encore.
