It appears that the long-held belief that no one is above the law might be put to the test as serious allegations emerge against both a Wisconsin judge and her peers. In Wisconsin, Judge Hannah Duggan has found herself in hot water, accused of acting unjudiciously to assist a defendant in evading federal authorities. Allegations have surfaced that Judge Duggan might have gone so far as to escort the suspect through a secret exit to keep him from being arrested. It is indeed hard to fathom that a judicial figure, expected to uphold the law, would allegedly contribute to such an unlawful endeavor. One might say that this is not just a bad episode from a courtroom drama, but a plot twist with potential real-life consequences.
Meanwhile, the situation isn’t much better down in New Mexico. Another judge, Nancy Cano, faces severe charges for harboring an illegal immigrant connected to a gang. The allegations suggest that Cano and her husband allowed this individual access to firearms and possibly shielded him from authorities. It raises a glaring question: how could those sworn to uphold the law engage in such reckless behavior? This sort of conduct seems to scream for accountability, even from those perched in positions of legal authority.
The Attorney General has made it clear that he does not see these events as mere showboating, but rather a serious breach of conduct that warrants legal action. Even former Assistant Attorney General Tom Dupree has asserted that the severity of these allegations, particularly when they involve public servants, cannot be overlooked. When judges begin to be perceived as part of the problem rather than the solution, public trust can erode faster than one can say “justice served.”
A particularly eyebrow-raising aspect of Judge Duggan’s case is her alleged sympathies toward the defendant, who, it should be noted, is facing accusations of domestic violence.
