The radical leftist and self-proclaimed socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has been proven wrong yet again. In a recent Instagram conversation, Ocasio-Cortez predicted that the conservative majority on the Supreme Court would strike down President Joe Biden’s plan to cancel up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt for certain eligible borrowers, claiming it was due to “corruption” instead of lack of authority.
However, Ocasio-Cortez conveniently ignored the fact that the Court has been highly skeptical of Biden’s student loan debt cancellation plans and the administration has no legal authority to enact such a policy. Even the HEROES Act, which she claims supports the administration’s case, only allows the modification of repayment requirements for service members and first responders during a national emergency. Canceling billions of dollars in student loan debt doesn’t fall under that category.
Moreover, Ocasio-Cortez’s baseless claim about the Supreme Court’s “corruption” has nothing to do with the current case. She is merely attempting to smear the Republican-appointed Court by bringing up an unrelated issue of ethical standards. Justice Clarence Thomas has been accused of certain ethical violations, but they have nothing to do with the legal challenge to Biden’s student loan debt relief plan.
It is clear that Ocasio-Cortez is attempting to deflect attention away from the fact that the Biden administration has overstepped its legal authority in attempting to cancel billions in student loan debt. The administration’s plan will cost taxpayers and states upwards of $400 billion, and it is no surprise that multiple legal challenges have been launched against it.
In the end, Ocasio-Cortez’s wild claims about the Supreme Court’s “corruption” will not save the Biden administration from its unconstitutional student loan debt cancellation plans. The Court’s ruling, expected to be issued in June or July, will likely strike down the administration’s policy.
