In a stunning twist, the 2024 GOP presidential race is heating up as Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, grabs the spotlight. But Republicans are left scratching their heads, wondering what Christie’s real agenda is for the country. After all, his tenure as governor was filled with a tangled web of questionable decisions and broken promises.
As Christie takes the stage alongside Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida in the first GOP presidential debate, it’s clear that these two contenders are neck and neck in the polls. However, DeSantis is armed with a powerful weapon to attack Christie’s credibility – his pledge to lower taxes for hard-working Americans. You see, Christie may have signed legislation that raised taxes in the past, which goes against his current promise to oppose any tax increase.
Back in 2016, Christie shamelessly worked with Democrats to raise taxes by a staggering $1.2 billion. He even had the audacity to sign a bill that increased the gasoline tax by a whopping 23 cents per gallon. This was New Jersey’s first tax on gasoline since 1988, causing prices to soar and hitting the wallets of everyday Americans. Talk about a broken promise!
On the other hand, we have DeSantis, who has gone above and beyond to deliver tax relief for the hardworking families of Florida. In fact, he recently signed the most significant tax relief plan in the state’s history, providing a staggering $2.7 billion in tax relief. This plan includes exemptions for essential baby and toddler needs, such as cribs, strollers, diapers, and more. Clearly, DeSantis is putting the needs of Florida families first and ensuring economic success is passed on to those who made it possible.

During the debate, Christie plans to attack DeSantis if he defends former President Trump, who, due to circumstances, will not be attending. But let’s be real here, Christie should be the one reconsidering his participation in this race. Who is he to belittle a Florida politician with a canned line on a debate stage? What could possibly go wrong, Chris?
Recent polls reveal that DeSantis is gaining ground, with 19 percent of Republican caucus-goers throwing their support behind him. Meanwhile, only five percent would choose Christie. And while Trump still holds a significant lead with 42 percent, securing his spot as the party’s first pick, Christie shouldn’t get too cozy. An Emerson College survey shows him pulling ahead of DeSantis in New Hampshire, a critical early presidential primary state. With Trump’s strong support, Christie boasts a one-percent advantage, garnering nine percent support.
It’s clear that Christie’s stained record as governor is following him as he sets his sights on the presidency. Republicans are right to question his agenda for the country. Can we really trust a politician who raises taxes and breaks promises? I think not. Thankfully, we have a strong contender in DeSantis, who consistently delivers on his promises and fights for the hardworking Americans he represents. Watch out, Christie, because the conservative waves are shifting, and the GOP is ready for true leadership, not broken promises.
