Americans are being warned of the deadly consequences of taking a new combination of illicit drugs. Not only is this new concoction dangerous, but it is also reportedly cheap to obtain.

Dr. Rahul Gupta, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, has alerted Americans to the upswing of Fentanyl-xylazine overdose deaths. According to a statement issued by the agency, the mix of the two drugs can result in significant health problems as well as death. The negative side effects are so severe that the drug combination has been classified as an “emerging threat,” a move that obliges the White House to develop an action plan to address the crisis.
What makes this new lethal drug mixture so dangerous is the minuscule amount required to be deadly. As little as two milligrams of fentanyl is enough to kill a person. The addition of the animal tranquilizer could increase the possibility of overdoses.
This announcement from the Office of National Drug Control Policy emphasizes the need for law enforcement to step up efforts to combat drug trafficking across the southern border. Representative Diana Harshbarger, a Republican from Tennessee, criticized the Biden administration for not doing enough to secure the border and curb the flow of these fatal drugs.
This new drug mixture has crept up on Americans, leading to a dramatic rise in deaths across the US. In 2021, more than 107,000 people died from Fentanyl overdose; by 2022, the number had risen to 14,100 pounds. The situation is dire, and with this latest drug mix, the situation will only get worse if the Biden administration does not take swift action to address the problem.
The manufacture and sale of the drug combination is driven by the profit of illicit drug traffickers. Making xylazine psychoactive allows traffickers to cut down on the amount of Fentanyl or heroin used in a mixture, raising the product’s overall profitability.
It is clear that drastic measures must be taken to address the growing death toll due to drug overdose. The Biden administration must initiate immediate and severe measures to curb the supply and demand of these lethal drugs. Failure to do so will only result in a greater loss of American lives.
