Kenyan President Ruto Holds Talks with Obama, Biden in DC

Kenyan President William Ruto met with former President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. on Thursday during his visit to the United States. Ruto also had a series of meetings with President Joe Biden and his team at the White House, with his state visit concluding with a state dinner at the White House.

During a joint press conference with Biden, the president made several mistakes, including mistakenly referring to Vice President Kamala Harris as “President Kamala Harris” and predicting that Africa, already boasting a population of over 1.4 billion people, would soon surpass a population of 1 billion.

Biden also appeared to read from a sheet of notes while answering questions from reporters, including lengthy responses on U.S. commitments to the International Monetary Fund’s plans to develop African countries and the specific U.S. humanitarian effort in the Congo. Additionally, he displayed confusion and called out reporters during the press conference.

Kenya is leading the support mission to Haiti to address gang violence, and the United States is providing logistical support and equipment, rather than sending troops. Biden defended this decision, stating that deploying U.S. forces in the Western Hemisphere could lead to misunderstanding and misrepresentation. Ruto and Obama exchanged views on democratic developments, climate, and peace and security challenges in Africa, as well as opportunities for Africa’s young demographic in tech, innovation, and education.

After meeting with Ruto, Obama attended a private reception with Biden and former President Bill Clinton at the White House, despite not being expected at the state dinner.

In conclusion, the meeting between Ruto and the U.S. leaders showcased discussions on important issues, but also highlighted some missteps and confusion on the part of the American president during the joint press conference.
