Pope Francis Favorability Plummets Among US Catholics Over Decade

Pope Francis’ Popularity Plummets Among U.S. Catholics Over the Last 10 Years!

The Pope’s Favorability Rating Tanking Among U.S. Catholics. Can We Really Be Surprised?

Pope Francis has seen his popularity decline over the past decade among U.S. Catholics, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll. From 2015 to 2021, the Pope’s favorability rating experienced a drop by 7 percentage points, from 90 percent to 83 percent. And in the last 3 years alone, it plummeted by an additional 8 percentage points, hitting a record low of 75 percent.

The most devout Catholics, those who attend Mass weekly, are the least supportive of him, with a favorability rating at a mere 71 percent. Shockingly, only 26 percent of all Catholics view the Pope “very favorably.” Compare that to Pope John Paul II, whose favorability rating never dipped below 91 percent during his 27-year tenure, with half of Catholics viewing him “very favorably.”

What could be causing this dramatic fall from grace, you might ask? Well, according to some experts, it’s not all that difficult to connect the dots. President of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, Dr. Bill Donohue, believes that in the past three years, the Pope has made some controversial moves, such as endorsing civil unions and allowing the blessing of homosexual couples, which has led to significant pushback from clergy worldwide.

But wait, there’s more! The Pope appointed Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández to head the Vatican’s doctrinal office, despite Fernández not being known for his theological expertise, but rather for his books on kissing and the spirituality of orgasms, which many have described as pornographic. Not exactly the kind of material one would expect from a top official at the Vatican.

Furthermore, the Pope has been criticized for failing to take action against clergy members accused of sacrilegious and sexual offenses, and for imposing strict limitations on the Latin Mass, much to the dismay of many Catholics. And if that weren’t enough, he has also disciplined conservative church leaders, leaving many practicing Catholics feeling disheartened and alienated.

These controversial decisions and actions are seen as “wrongheaded” by many Catholics, according to Donohue, and they are likely contributing to the Pope’s declining favorability rating. So, it’s no wonder his popularity is taking a nosedive.

Could it be that the Pope’s recent decisions are causing a rift within the Catholic community? One thing’s for sure – Pope Francis has some serious image rehabilitation work cut out for him.
