Starbucks Launches Sustainable Cups Ahead of Earth Day

Starbucks, the beloved coffee giant, has decided to bless the world with a new line of “sustainable cold cups” right as Earth Day approaches. How convenient! This news comes after four whole years of the company playing in their little Tryer Center in Seattle, trying to figure out how to reduce plastics in their cups by a whopping 20%. Their big brains have deemed these new cups “sustainable” in their efforts to slash carbon emissions, reduce water usage, and cut down on waste. They’re aiming to have their carbon, water, and waste footprints chopped in half by the year 2030.

What’s even better is that Starbucks is estimating this change will make a significant dent in the amount of plastic waste ending up in landfills. In fact, they’re claiming that these new cups will eliminate a mind-boggling 13.5 million pounds of plastic every year.

These cups will be designed with a wider mouth so that they can use the same lid for all their coffee sizes: tall, grande, and venti. So not only are they saving the Earth, they’re making it more convenient for their customers.

In 2022, Starbucks started making even more changes to their cups, like ditching the paper ones and opting for strawless lids. This Earth-loving company is on a roll. And if that isn’t enough, let’s throw some more numbers out there to really drive the point home: Apparently, Starbucks goes through a mind-blowing 8,000 paper cups every minute. That’s over 4 billion cups a year.
