The Republican party is on the prowl for a new Speaker of the House after the abrupt ousting of Kevin McCarthy. And guess whose name has suddenly popped up in the mix? Yep, you guessed it – the one and only Donald J. Trump. The former president, who doesn’t even have to be a member of Congress, is being considered for the role. Talk about shaking things up!
But hold your horses, folks! Not everyone is thrilled with the idea of Trump taking on this prestigious position. Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, publicly expressed his discontent, highlighting Trump’s opposition to a recorded vote on the COVID relief stimulus bill, the CARES Act. Massie argued that this alone disqualifies Trump from becoming Speaker. And this guy knows what he’s talking about, having raised concerns about the bill back in March 2020. He’s got a good point there!
In response to Massie’s objections, Trump, being his usual outspoken self, took to his Twitter account (back when it was still called Twitter) to bash Massie. The former president called him a “third-rate grandstander” and even suggested that Massie should be booted out of the Republican Party! Wow, talk about a fiery exchange.
During a recent House floor speech supporting Kevin McCarthy, Massie once again brought up his concerns about the CARES Act. You gotta give the guy credit for consistency! He questioned the delay of 12 appropriations bills for a mere $100 billion, when the real problem was Trump and Pelosi pushing through a whopping $2 trillion bill. Massie sure knows his numbers!
Despite the almost unanimous support the bill received, not everyone was convinced of its merits. John Stossel, in a column published on Townhall, highlighted the lack of a formal vote in the House and expressed concerns about our skyrocketing national debt. Kudos to Stossel for speaking his mind!
Now, it should come as no surprise that Massie refuses to support Trump for Speaker, given their past clashes. But what might raise some eyebrows is his open support for House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan as Speaker. In fact, Massie has been rooting for Jordan even before he officially threw his hat in the ring. And guess what? Jordan became a contender on Wednesday! Looks like Massie has a good eye for leadership.
Oh, and did we mention that Donald Trump is set to attend the closed House Republican meeting where they’ll discuss the selection of candidates? Brace yourselves for some intense political drama! It’ll be interesting to see how this all unfolds.
In conclusion, the search for a new Speaker of the House has taken an unexpected turn with the possibility of Donald Trump stepping into the role. But Rep. Thomas Massie isn’t buying it, given Trump’s stance on the CARES Act. Will the controversial former president seal the deal, or will someone like Jim Jordan swoop in and take the crown? Only time will tell, my friends. Stay tuned for more political fireworks!
