House Republicans are expressing concern about the Biden administration’s insufficient security measures along the northern border of the United States. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) has led a group of over two dozen House Republicans in writing a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, criticizing the administration’s policies that have endangered the country. The letter references a significant rise in illegal border crossings along the U.S.-Canada border, with a 743% increase recorded between October 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022, in comparison to the same period in 2021.

The House Republicans’ letter urges the Department of Homeland Security to outline their plans to address the influx of illegal immigrants and contraband crossing the northern U.S. border. As co-chair of the newly established Northern Border Security Caucus, Rep. Kelly stated that the statistics indicate a surge in the trafficking of people and drugs across the U.S.-Canada border, which he attributes to the Biden administration’s lenient border policies.
Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT) and Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-NY) have expressed concern over the lack of attention paid to the northern border amidst the focus on the southern border, leaving it susceptible to criminals, cartels, and terrorists. Additionally, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has pointed out that communities in Upstate New York are already experiencing the consequences of the border crisis caused by the Biden administration, and therefore deserve to know how he intends to ensure the security of the northern border while being transparent about it.
It is clear that President Biden’s lax immigration policies have created a dangerous situation along both of America’s land borders. The House Republicans are right to call out the Biden administration for their failure to secure our borders and protect our citizens. It is time for President Biden to take responsibility for his actions and take decisive action to secure our borders and protect our citizens against illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
