Decline in LGBT TV Characters as Hollywood Adjusts Focus

In the 1990s, a popular TV show called “Will and Grace” featured main characters who were homosexual. Many people saw this as a big change in the way TV shows included LGBT characters. The organization GLAAD has been working hard to get more LGBT characters and storylines in TV shows, movies, video games, and other types of media.

However, a recent report by GLAAD shows that the number of LGBT characters on TV is going down. The report looks at how many LGBT characters regularly appear on TV shows on different networks and streaming platforms. It found that there were 468 such characters between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024. But now, 36 percent of those characters won’t be on TV anymore. This is more than 100 fewer LGBT characters compared to the previous year.

The number of main LGBT characters on TV shows also decreased by nearly 50 percent. GLAAD is not happy about this change. They believe the TV industry is changing, and there are fewer resources available for LGBT representation.

It’s not surprising that Hollywood is moving away from LGBT projects to some extent. Many recent LGBT movies have not made a lot of money. Even a Disney movie with an openly gay main character didn’t do well. This problem has been going on for a while, as a 2014 article points out.

Now, Hollywood is having a hard time financially, so they might focus on projects that are more likely to be successful. It’s possible that LGBT shows and movies are considered more risky and are getting less attention because of this.
