Trump to Court Libertarians at National Convention in Bid to Thwart Kennedy

Former President Donald Trump announced that he will be addressing the Libertarian National Convention in Washington, D.C. later this month, in an effort to reach out to voters beyond the Republican base and avoid losing support to independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Trump expressed his admiration for the Libertarian Party, stating that joining forces with them and the Republican Party, which he believes shares many Libertarian views, would secure an easy victory in the upcoming election. He emphasized the need to work together to achieve freedom and liberty for all Americans and implied that another term under the current administration would bring about negative outcomes.

This move comes as Trump’s campaign has increased its criticisms of Kennedy, who is running as an independent against both Trump and President Joe Biden. Kennedy has been seeking the support of disenchanted Democrats and Republicans seeking an alternative to the anticipated rematch of the 2020 election.

Kennedy has been vocal about his alignment with the Libertarian Party and has indicated a positive relationship with the party. The prospect of teaming up with the Libertarian Party could potentially aid Kennedy in gaining ballot access in all 50 states, including crucial battlegrounds, although Kennedy has previously stated that he did not plan to run on the Libertarian ticket.

Trump’s super PAC released an old video clip of Kennedy criticizing red states, potentially in an effort to discredit him among potential supporters. Trump and his campaign have been actively attacking Kennedy, with Trump branding him as “the most Radical Left Candidate in the race, by far” and accusing him of supporting “economy killing disasters.”

The Libertarian Party expressed optimism about the prospect of influencing Trump’s policy positions and welcomed the opportunity to have a major party POTUS candidate address their convention for the first time in 50 years. They aim to utilize this platform to advance their message of liberty.

Overall, Trump’s decision to address the Libertarian National Convention reflects his eagerness to appeal to a broader voter base and secure a victory in the upcoming election.
