Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey is causing outrage among conservatives with his latest proposal to pack the Supreme Court. The Democratic senator’s Judiciary Act of 2023 proposes to add four seats to the highest court in the land and calls for the resignation of Justice Clarence Thomas. During a press conference on the Supreme Court steps, Markey accused Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett of having “no right” to be on the court. He also claimed that the court had become packed with partisan justices eager to favor their deep-pocketed, right-wing special interest benefactors.
Markey’s bill is supported by pro-abortion groups Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America, and other prominent Democrats, including Georgia Representative Hank Johnson and California Representative Adam Schiff. Markey pointed the finger of blame at Republicans, accusing them of breaking the rules in 2016 and 2020 to pack the court. Republicans refused to confirm Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court in 2016. After former President Donald Trump took office, they confirmed Gorsuch in 2017. Then, following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Republicans confirmed Barrett in October 2020.
Markey’s press conference is the latest in a long line of attacks on the Supreme Court by the Democrats and their allies on the radical left. With court packing, they hope to strengthen their grip on the judiciary and overturn key conservative decisions, including the landmark Roe v. Wade case. The proposal has been slammed by Republicans and legal experts alike, who see it as a blatant attempt to undermine the independence of the judiciary and politicize the court.
We're live in front of the Supreme Court to reintroduce the Judiciary Act, our court expansion bill. It's past time to restore the American people’s faith in our nation’s highest court. https://t.co/rcse2pRgi2

However, Markey remaihttps://twitter.com/SenMarkey/status/1658503635913920519ns defiant, saying that his proposal is necessary to “bolster our institutions.” He claims that the fight for reproductive freedom is intertwined with the fight to strengthen our democracy and that the court has become an instrument of the right-wing special interest benefactors. With the support of Planned Parenthood and other powerful liberal groups, Markey’s bill is likely to face strong opposition from conservatives. But he remains confident that his proposal will succeed, arguing that it is necessary to preserve the rights of the American people, even if it means bending the rules.
