Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia has been making waves in the Biden administration by blocking some of their nominees. Manchin has made it clear that he is not interested in any nominees who are too far left or right, but rather those who are more centrist. This week, Manchin announced his opposition to Gigi Sohn, President Joe Biden’s nominee to chair the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and Daniel Werfel to head the Internal Revenue Service. Both nominees withdrew their names from consideration shortly after Manchin’s announcement.
Manchin’s opposition is especially important due to the health issues of Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California and John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, as well as Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell’s hospitalization after a Wednesday night fall. Manchin has also been critical of the Biden administration for touting the Inflation Reduction Act as strictly an environmental bill, when it is also for energy security. He has made it clear that he will continue to hold their feet to the fire on this issue.

It is clear that Senator Manchin is not afraid to stand up to the Biden administration and demand more centrist nominees. His actions are a reminder that the Democratic Party should not be taken for granted and that they should be held accountable for their promises. It is also a reminder that even within the party, there is room for debate and disagreement. While some may view Manchin’s actions as obstructionist, others may view them as a necessary check on the Biden administration’s power. Either way, it is clear that Manchin is not afraid to make his voice heard and stand up for what he believes in.
