U.S. Representative Juan Vargas (D-CA) has said that he might be interested in supporting the Republican-led effort to oust Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for the way he handled the crisis at the southern border. Vargas is a Democrat, and the GOP-led effort is mostly driven by the fact that the federal government, led by Mayorkas and U.S. President Joe Biden, has not succeeded in securing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Vargas made the announcement at a press conference on Friday. He said that Mayorkas "told us he would help us, yet he hasn't done it." He sold us out." This statement is very different from the reason House Republicans want to get rid of Mayorkas: the fact that illegal immigration has reached record levels since Biden took office.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) recently reported that the Biden administration’s new “border enforcement measures” have not succeeded in curbing illegal immigration, but instead have just rerouted much of the flow through legal ports of entry. This has led multiple House Republicans – including U.S. Reps. Pat Fallon (R-TX) and Andy Biggs (R-AZ) – to introduce articles of impeachment against Mayorkas.
However, Vargas is looking to oust Mayorkas for a different purpose: for the border security project that is presently taking place at Friendship Park. Friendship Park, which is between San Diego, California, and Tijuana, Mexico, has been a place for families to meet for a long time. There is a gate between the two cities. The aim of the project is to get rid of the old barriers, which are said to be falling apart. Vargas thinks that Mayorkas shouldn't be able to do this project, so he is thinking about joining the effort by Republicans to get rid of him.
Even if Mayorkas is impeached, it is unlikely that he will be found guilty because the Democrats control the U.S. Senate. This means that Americans will most likely have to deal with Mayorkas for the rest of his time in the Biden administration. This is all because of how he handled the crisis at the southern border.
It is clear that Secretary Mayorkas has failed to secure our southern border and has instead allowed illegal immigration to run rampant. While it is encouraging that Representative Vargas may be willing to join the Republican-led effort to impeach him, it is still unlikely that Mayorkas will be convicted due to the Democrat-controlled Senate. This is yet another example of how Democrats are more interested in protecting their own interests than those of the American people. It is time for our elected officials to put aside their partisan differences and work together to secure our borders and protect our nation from illegal immigration.
