Trump Trails Biden by 10 Points in NY, Narrow Lead Despite GOP Gains

A recent survey by the New York Times Siena poll shows that former President Donald Trump is trailing current President Joe Biden in New York by ten percentage points. The poll revealed that Mr. Biden leads Mr. Trump with 47% of the votes compared to Mr. Trump’s 37%. The survey also found that 4% of voters would choose someone else, 7% were undecided, and 7% indicated that they would not vote.

Although a 10-point lead would typically be considered positive for a candidate in many states, it is not seen as particularly strong for Mr. Biden in New York. In the 2020 election, Mr. Biden won the state by a much larger margin, receiving 60.9% of the votes compared to Mr. Trump’s 37.8%.

According to the poll, Mr. Biden retains the support of 72% of Democrats, while Mr. Trump has the backing of 81% of Republicans. Additionally, Mr. Trump is leading among independent voters with 46% support compared to Mr. Biden’s 32%.

The survey also delves into party affiliations, revealing that a small percentage of Democrats, Republicans, and independents in New York would choose a candidate other than Mr. Biden or Mr. Trump. Furthermore, it shows that a higher proportion of independents (9%) do not plan to vote compared to Democrats (6%) and Republicans (3%).

The poll highlights Mr. Trump’s support among Black voters in New York, where he has the backing of 27% compared to Mr. Biden’s 67%. Among Hispanic voters, Mr. Biden is leading with 36% support, while Mr. Trump garnered 26% support.

The poll indicates a narrow margin between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden among younger voters aged 18-34, suggesting potential challenges for the Democratic coalition in other states.

Despite the close competition between the two candidates in New York, historical voting patterns show a consistent trend of Republican candidates performing poorly in the state. The survey coincides with Mr. Trump’s ongoing legal proceedings in New York City, where he faces charges related to alleged misconduct during the 2016 presidential election campaign.

The survey was conducted among 806 New York state registered voters and has a 4.1 percentage point margin of error. The results come at a time when Mr. Biden plans to campaign in New York, while Mr. Trump is involved in his legal trial in Manhattan.
