In a stunning turn of events, Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina revealed a horrifying death threat he received over the controversial potential ban on TikTok. The Republican senator took to the Twitter-sphere to share the shocking voicemail in which a disgruntled woman promised to “find [him] and shoot [him]” if the popular app is banned. And that’s not all folks, she also threatened to “cut [him] into pieces” because apparently, TikTok is her “only entertainment” and she’s “trying to get rich like that.”

Tillis didn’t hold back in his assessment of the situation, lambasting TikTok for its “misinformation campaign” and calling out the platform for allegedly pushing people to make threatening calls to their members of Congress. The senator didn’t mince words, calling attention to the fact that such threats against elected officials could be considered a federal crime. He didn’t stop there, though, going on to emphasize the grave danger posed by the app’s “Communist-Chinese aligned company.”
The terrifying threat comes in the midst of a heated debate surrounding the future of TikTok, with the House recently passing legislation that would compel its parent company ByteDance to sell the platform or else face a ban from U.S. app stores and web hosting services. China wasted no time in lashing out against the proposed ban, issuing a warning that it would undoubtedly “come back to bite the United States.” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, condemned the move as “bullying behavior” that disrupts normal business activity and damages international economic and trade order.
Despite the bill sailing through the House with a commanding 352-65 vote, its fate in the Senate remains uncertain. The battle lines are drawn, and the stakes couldn’t be higher as the future of TikTok hangs in the balance.
